Disaster Preparedness & Response for Medical Libraries

Sponsored by:

The Association of North Carolina Health & Science Libraries

William F. Andrews Center for Medical Education
Raleigh, North Carolina

June 15, 2007 9:30 AM – 4:30 PM

Medical librarians have a responsibility to provide a continuity of access to knowledge-based biomedical information to support health care before, during, and after disasters. Hurricanes, tornadoes, and flooding have caused significant damage to libraries in recent years. Other natural and man made disasters are also a threat to the services provided by medical librarians. Although we can not predict when disasters will strike, we can prepare for them.

Disaster planning may reduce the loss of collections and resources, and facilitate the recovery process. Hospitals and medical centers are required to comply with standards for disaster preparedness. To support health care providers, medical librarians should also be ready to respond to moderate, major, and catastrophic disasters.

This one day class will provide training in:

  • writing a library disaster plan
  • emergency preparedness
  • techniques for salvaging water damaged material
  • continuity of library services
  • regional library disaster assistance

Medical librarians, archivists, curators, facility managers, disaster team members, and others responsible for disaster planning, mitigation, preparedness and recovery for health sciences libraries are encouraged to attend. Faculty and students in library science schools are also welcome.

There is no MLA continuing education credit for this class.

ANCHASL at NCLA

ANCHASL sponsored a booth at the North Carolina Library Association 56th Biennial Conference held  September 20-23, 2005 at the Benton Convention Center in Winston-Salem.  The purpose of the booth was to raise the profile of the organization among N.C. Librarians, with an eye to increasing memberships and meeting attendance.

ANCHASL at MAC 2005

The North Carolina librarians are gaining quite a reputation for being the "Good Time Bunch" at MAC every year.  Everyone was in a festive mood, and that reputation for being a fun-loving group must have preceded us, because the hotel had located us in a room far away from most of the activity.  As it turned out, possibly not far enough to contain our rowdy laughter, as they ended up closing the doors to our room once we got going.

We played the "Sit Down If..." game that Burnette Bell, our Membership Chair, had prepared for us.  Karen Lee Martinez emceed the event and, according to Beverly Murphy, she “was wonderful as the hostess and she did a great job!”  Since we had so many valuable prizes to award (let's hear it for those beautiful ANCHASL T shirts!), many attendees continued with their "sit down if" suggestions, to keep the game going.  We discovered many factoids about our colleagues, when folks sat down if they met certain conditions; for example, "Sit down if you have ever blamed it on the dog.” Well maybe we learned more than we wanted to know, but, per Melanie Norton, “everyone had a great time.”

It was a great opportunity to just visit, snack, and have fun, and relax our busy minds, as we took a break from all the conference content.

Thanks to all who planned for this event. We look forward to more good times next year.  Maybe someone will attend, and bring their digital camera....
