2016 ANCHASL Spring Meeting and Data Visualization Class
Friday, April 15, 2016

Topic: Data Visualization Workshop
Instructor: Angela Zoss, Data Visualization Coordinator, Duke University
Location: Duke University, Bostock Library, Room 023 (basement)
Please note: This class does not offer MLA CE credit

Workshop Description
As data visualization becomes increasingly popular for research and business reporting, tools to create those visualizations are growing in power and complexity. Figuring out which chart would be best for your data and how to create that chart is far from a simple task. This workshop will offer a hands-on session in the morning where participants will walk through the creation of a series of basic charts and maps using free tools such as Excel and Tableau Public. In the afternoon, the workshop will be more of a conversational session on what makes a good chart, how to pick the right chart for a particular dataset, and what are some easy ways to change the design of the chart to make sure it is easy to read and looks professional.

Directions and Parking
To find parking, attendees are encouraged to carpool and arrive as early as possible. The closest place to park is the Bryan Center Parking Garage, but this garage fills quickly and is occasionally closed for special events, so spaces may be limited. If you don't have mobility issues, you might want to go straight to the second best option - the Duke Gardens Parking Lot, which is a bit farther (about a 10 minute walk). Spaces may be limited there as well. The hourly rate for both lots is $2/hr but the maximum daily rate for the Duke Gardens Lot is $8. For those with mobility issues, there may be a few accessible parking spots near the libraries.
